If you are running multiple marketing campaigns across email, social media, and paid ads, you need to know which channels are actually driving results. That is where UTM parameters come in.

What Are UTM Parameters?

UTM stands for Urchin Tracking Module. UTM parameters are small snippets of text added to the end of a URL that tell analytics tools where your traffic is coming from. They do not change the page content, but they give you rich data about the visitor's journey.

The Five Main UTM Parameters

  • utm_source: Identifies where the traffic originated. Examples: google, newsletter, facebook, twitter.
  • utm_medium: Describes the marketing medium. Examples: email, cpc (cost-per-click), social, organic.
  • utm_campaign: Names the specific campaign. Examples: spring_sale_2025, product_launch.
  • utm_term: (Optional) Identifies the paid keyword. Example: running+shoes.
  • utm_content: (Optional) Differentiates similar links in the same campaign. Example: banner_ad_top vs banner_ad_sidebar.

Best Practices for UTM Parameters

  • Be consistent with naming: Use lowercase and underscores. spring_sale and Spring_Sale will show up as two different campaigns in analytics.
  • Never use UTM parameters for internal links: This creates inaccurate attribution loops in your analytics.
  • Document your conventions: Keep a shared spreadsheet so your team uses the same source and medium names.
  • Use a URL builder: Manually typing UTM parameters is error-prone. A tool ensures consistency.
